ACTION IN SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

On March 3, 2009 the City Council of San Juan Capistrano voted to prohibit overnight parking on Camino Capistrano between La Zanja and Oso Road. This prohibition negatively affects hundreds of families. Residents are forced to park in other areas, so the parking problem just moves, but is not solved. As well, residents worry that a wide-open road means faster speeds, thus putting their kids in harm's way. Finally, some workers arrive home at a late hour and are concerned about their safety walking from their car to their residence. For all these reasons and more, on Wednesday, April 22, grassroots leaders from CREER and OCCCO, along with residents negatively affected by the parking prohibition, gathered together at the Mission Basilica in order to find a constructive solution to the problem of overcrowding.

HERLINDA SANDOVAL St. Boniface LOC, Anaheim

Herlinda is an active member in the life of her community and part of a local organizing committee in Anaheim.

Recently, Herlinda represented her community at City Hall to the Anaheim Mayor and City Council during the “public comments” time.

She stepped up to the microphone and in broken, but powerful English shared her community’s pain and urged officials to make long-term investments in job creation for low-income families.

Herlinda: A strong voice in hard times.
